“You can’t manage what you don’t measure” is an old management adage, but is still true today, especially in pharmacy. There’s sometimes a big difference between the perception of pharmacy’s turnaround time and the actual statistics.
Pharmacy management may assume that they are delivering on their promises, while unit nursing staff thinks medications take way too long. Who will win this long-fought argument? Only teams and organizations with robust data can differentiate between reality and perception.
Our colleagues in retail pharmacy have medication timing down to a science, so they know exactly how long it takes to get from order to delivery (although some feel they push speed boundaries that risk safety). But in the hospital environment, medication preparation and delivery isn’t typically measured and tracked during processing or beyond the pharmacy’s doors.
We are living in the “Age of Big Data”, and often nothing speaks better to the hospital financial team or the C-suite more than the raw facts. So I encourage all pharmacy managers to get out there and start collecting more data on their operational performance metrics. In situations where you have to justify new FTEs, new equipment, or other expenses, it’s critical to have that data to back you up.
